Prime Mover
This week, Encore has copies of David Caesar’s Prime Mover, courtesy of Madman Entertainment.
This road movie tells the story of a young man whose only dream is to have his own prime mover and live life on the road as a truckie. But when he falls in love with a ‘Dubbo gypsy’, his plans change and he borrows money from a loan shark. From then on, things never seem to go in the right direction.
Well-intentioned, it’s difficult to know who the target audience is – too much drama for truckies, too low-brow for art film buffs, too in-between for everyone else.
Interesting stylistic choices such as colourful halos and truck artwork that almost comes to life give the film some vibrancy and fantasy a la Baz Luhrmann, but they are used too arbitrarily to be cohesive or contribute something to this otherwise everyday story.
Still, worth a look, particularly for Michael Dorman and Emily Barclay.
Prime Mover is available on DVD now, as part of Madman’s Iconic Aussie Films line.

Longest drive was with kids and mother going on a 6 hour trek to visit relatives on the NSW south coast. THEY started on the ‘are we nearly there’ after about 45 minutes and never stopped!! Coming home was just as bad as everyone was sick with colds and sore throats and very techy – had to stop for eats and a walk about after the first half hour. Oh to travel alone!!
