Fox Studios comes out of hibernation as the bustling screen hub we want to see

A few months back I visited Fox Studios in Sydney to view the filming of a commercial for Earth Hour.

The main thing that struck me (apart from the massively rude security guy on the gate) was how depressingly empty most of the place was.

It was desolate. It had the atmosphere of a business district on a Sunday afternoon rather than the film hub of one of the world’s great cities.

Today though, the feeling is very different.

Board room showdowns being filmed for The Celebrity Apprentice, Mel B et al bustling around for The X Factor, Paradise Lost gearing up and, of course, the massive undertaking that is The Great Gatsby.

Right now Sydney is a screen city. Long may it last.

  2. How quickly things can turnaround (viz. Paradise Lost). To avoid contributing to the depressing tone that is the Encore web forum, I won’t say, by way of commentary, “Today though, the feeling is very different. ” Instead I would like to take the opportunity to heap paeans of praise on Mr. Luhrmann and his ability to rise above the tortured ruck and keep making films. In the above list, if you discount the television production, only The Great Gatsby has survived and triumphed (well, maybe that’s a little premature). With all the soul-searching, brow-and-breast beating, and ass-kicking (have I left anything out?) that goes on in these pristine page there is scant recognition of the fact that Mr. Luhrmann gets the things made and gets the bums (should that be patrons?)-on-the-seats. Why isn’t Mr. Luhrmann on an unmarked Gulfstream and on his way to Egypt where the Australian Extraordinary Rendition crew from the local embassy can squeeze his production secrets out of his very being: then come back and tell Encore readers how he does it (they, or Kevin Rudd, could deny that they were even present). Maybe Mr Burrowes in the above post was tempting Fate when he said: “Long may it last.”? Maybe it was a secret curse?
