Call for entries: feature films at Cannes
Christian Jeune, deputy general delegate and Australian preselector for Festival de Cannes official selection in 2012 will be in Australia early December to view new feature films for potential selection.
He is looking for films to run in In Competition, Out of Competition and Un Certain Regard.
Submission deadlines to Screen Australia is Wednesday 7 December.
Adaptation of John Birmingham’s Tasmanian Babes Fiasco wins BIFF’s Chauvel Award
Producer Bec Dakin, scriptwriter Karl Mather and direct Zenon Kohler have won the Chauvel Award script adaptation as part of the Brisbane International Film Festival.
The competition, worth $40,000, aims to encourage the work of producers and writers at an early stage in a project’s life.
Dakin, Mather and Kohler have won for the adaptation of the John Birmingham novel, the Tasmanian Babes Fiasco.
Quickflix sign VOD rights with NBCUniversal
Quickflix has entered into a licensing agreement with NBCUniversal International Television Distribution for its movie streaming service, it was announced today.
The contract secures Quickflix the subscription and transactional VOD rights in Australia for a broad selection of current and catalogue feature films.
Movie Extra’s Webfest 2.0 finalists announced
The Movie Network Channel has announced the finalists for its Movie Extra Webfest 2.0 competition.
The competition called for entrants to produce a 60 second trailer for a web series idea and post it on to the Movie Extra’s Facebook page.
The winner will receive $100,000 budget to produce a seven part series to premiere on Movie Extra’s Youtube site.

Kieran Darcy-Smith’s Wish You Were Here to open Sundance Film Festival
Filmmaker Kieran Darcy-Smith’s debut feature Wish You Were Here has been selected to open Sundance Film Festival.
The screening will also be the world premiere of the film co-written by Darcy-Smith and his wife Felicity Price and produced by Angie Fielder.
Encore spoke with Darcy-Smith in November: “It’s been an extraordinary 18 months and we were given this opportunity to make this movie. I’m thrilled with the response.”
Needle gets Mexican theatrical release across 50 screens
Australian horror film Needle will receive a Mexican theatrical release, scheduled for February.
The film will be released across 50 screens in Mexico after a successful run in Turkey across 62 screens, grossing US$260,000.
Simon West signs on to direct Dust and Glory
English director Simon West has been brought on to direct Dust and Glory.
The Expendables 2 and Tomb Raider director will helm the story set in the 1950s, following a car race that covered 10,000km around Australia and focused on the rivalry between an American driver and his Australian counterpart.
Robert Galinsky (Prey) has written the script based upon the Evan Green novelisation of the events.
20th Century Fox home entertainment sign deal with Hopscotch/eOne
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment have signed a deal to distribute Hopscotch/Entertainment One’s new release, TV and catalogue products.
The agreement, which kicks in as of February 1 2012, covers both the Australian and New Zealand markets.
The Hunter leads AACTA Awards nominations
The Hunter has lead the AACTA Awards with 14 nominations including best film.
The film, by Daniel Nettheim, is also up for best direction, adapted screenplay, cinematography, sound, production design, costume, original music score, and visual effects. Meanwhile, Willem Dafoe, Frances O’Connor, Sam Neill and Morgana Davies are all up for acting awards.
The film has currently made just over $1m at the local box office.
It’s the first year for the re-launched AACTAs, formerly the AFI awards.
ABC confirms axing of Hungry Beast
The ABC confirmed yesterday current affairs show Hungry Beast has been axed.
Produced by Andrew Denton’s Zapruder’s Other Films, the show began in 2009 and ran for three seasons.
