Tickets for the inaugural AACTA Awards are now on sale.
Tickets to the AACTA Awards Luncheon on Sunday 15 January at Sydney’s Westin Hotel are $235.
Doron Kipen replaces Trevor Harrison as president of sound guild
Trevor Harrison has stepped down as president of the Australian Screen Sound Guild (ASSG).
Harrison, who has worked on SeaChange, McLeods’ Daughters and Einstein Factor, held the role for eight years.
Doron Kipen will replace Harrison as president with a committee of Tony Murtagh (The Way Back, Happy Feet Two), Jenny Ward (Legend of the Guardians, Happy Feet), Nigel Christensen (Australia, A Few Best Men), Liam Egan (Superman Returns, Clubland), Will Ward (Red Dog, The Way Back), Peter Miller and Rhette Dufty.
Future filmmaker wins scholarship to International Film School Sydney
A young filmmaker has won a scholarship to the International Film School Sydney after winning the school’s second annual Future Filmmaker competition.
Danny Kim, won the scholarship, worth $44,000, with his three minute film All the Best.
The theme of this year’s competition was “be daring”.
Flickerfest announces world and Australian premieres in local program
Bondi’s Flickerfest has announced its Australian program with both World and local premieres on its list of 45 films.
The festival is in its 21st year, and is an Oscar-accredited festival for short films, with world and Australian premieres from the likes of Antony J Bowman, Nash Edgerton, Matthew Jenkin, Mike Hoath, Zak Hilditch and more.
Screen Australia invest in $1m across five documentaries
Screen Australia has invested $1m in five documentaries through the signature documentary program.
The investment is expected to trigger $2.2m in production.
Recipients include writer/director Matthew Bate, producer/director John Cherry, filmmaker Lawrence Johnston, writer/producer/director Janine Hosking and the team of writer/director Juliet Lamont and producer Jessica Douglas-Henry.
Jessie French appointed marketing manager at SceneOn
Jessie French has joined the Melbourne-based production company SceneOn as marketing manager.
French was previously involved in the marketing of Amiel Courtin-Wilson’s feature film Hail, which was selected for this year’s Venice International Film Festival.
French said: “I find SceneOn’s approach of being a creative collective of directors with post facilities, an exciting prospect. There is a great energy at SceneOn, and I’m looking forward to building a strong future for the company.”
John Edwards awarded AFTRS honorary degree
Producer John Edwards has been given an honorary degree from the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS).
The honour was part of the AFTRS 2011 student graduation ceremony held at Carriage Works on Friday 9 December.
Claudia Karvan, co-producer of Spirited and Love My Way with Edwards, presented him with the honour. Simon Crean, minister for the arts also delivered a keynote speech.
Emile Sherman, Kriv Stenders and Gillian Armstrong receive Screen Australia funding
Screen Australia has announced a new round of funding for 18 filmmaking teams to develop feature projects including teams led by producer Emile Sherman (The King’s Speech), director Kriv Stenders (Red Dog) and director Gillian Armstrong.
The funding totals $500,000.
Sherman is working with Clayton Jacobsen (Kenny) to develop crime film The Docks with writers Jamie Browne and Kris Mrksa.
Auteur director and cancer sufferer Paul Cox is working with executive producer Shaun Miller and producer Maggie Miles to develop his own memoir Tales from the Cancer Ward into drama script Force of Destiny.
Actor Harold Hopkins dies, aged 67
Australian actor Harold Hopkins died on Saturday, aged 67 of asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma in a Sydney hospice.
Most recently Hopkins was seen in Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities as Melbourne gun dealer George Joseph and as Chester in the film The Clinic.
Screen Australia invests in Thomas Mai and Josh Pomeranz’s FanDependent
Thomas Mai and Josh Pomeranz of Spectrum 2.0 are the recipients of Screen Australia’s latest round of the Innovation Distribution program.
Mai and Pomeranz’s FanDependent is a platform to support low-budget screen content that doesn’t fit into the traditional distribution and exhibition model.
The platform will partner with 10 filmmaker teams over two years to help build an audience and raise finance through crowd-funding.
