Screen Australia announces second batch of documentary investment in a week
Screen Australia has announced a second batch of documentary investment within a week.
The national screen agency today announced $2.6m investment in eight documentaries.
The investment is expected to result in over $8m in production.
Of the investment, Liz Stevens, Screen Australia’s documentary manager said: “The stories coming to our screens in this mix of science, history and social contemporary documentaries are incredibly exciting, reflecting the enormous talent and scope of the filmmakers.”
Costa Georgiadis to host Gardening Australia
Former SBS talent Costa Geordiadis will cross to ABC TV to be the new host of Gardening Australia.
Geordiadis, a landscape architect originally came to national prominence as the host of Costa’s Garden Odyssy.
Jennifer Collins, head of factual at the ABC, said: “Costa will bring an informed and entertaining spirit to the series. He’s got a reputation for having his finger on the pulse and I’m looking forward to seeing him communicate his exciting approach to gardening in his own inimitable style.”
Brown to step down as executive director of SPAA
Geoff Brown will step down as executive director of the Screen Producers Association of Australia, it has been announced today.
Brown has been with SPAA for 16 years, the last ten as CEO.
A new CEO is expected to begin in October 2012, but Brown will continue through until the SPAA Conference in November 2012 before departing.
Brothers in Arms announces more cast
Screentime and Network Ten have announced more names to their six part series Brothers in Arms.
Alongside actors already announced Callan Mulvey, Anthony Hayes and Damian Walshe-Howling, will be Susie Porter (East West 101, Sisters of War), Todd Lasance (Cloudstreet, Crownies), Luke Ford (Red Dog, Animal Kingdom) and Luke Hemsworth.
Animal Kingdom to become Showtime TV series
Writer/Director David Michod’s 2010 hit Animal Kingdom will be made into a US TV series, Deadline is reporting.
The project, about the inter-play between a criminal family and the police, is in development, but it has not yet been revealed if the production will be set in Australia or the US.
Embassy Roadshow comes to an end
Screen Australia and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to bring to a close the organisations’ joint venture, the Embassy Roadshow program.
The Embassy Roadshow was an initiative to get Australian films played to international audiences. The program began in 2001 and has had over 3000, to over 250,000 people in over 100 international locations.
The initiative saw Mark Lazarus, producer of the 2002 film Australian Rules screened his picture in Ghana in March 2010.
Guy Pearce nominated for Golden Globe
Australian actor Guy Pearce has been nominated for a Golden Globe, best performance by an actor in a supporting role, series, mini-series or motion picture made for TV.
Pearce is nominated for his role of Monty Beragon in the miniseries Mildred Pierce for HBO. The nominations are made by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Film executive Ann Lyon has died
Film executive Ann Lyons has passed away after a short illness this week.
Lyons was co-founder of LA-based IFM World Releasing Inc and long time business partner of Antony I Ginnane in Australia’s FG Film Productions PTY LTD.
Ginnane said: “I have lost my best friend. Ann was the rock solid underpinning of our production and distribution activity for more than 30 years. She was an extraordinary judge of story and had an editor’s eye for structure.”
