MIFF’s new ad campaign

Melbourne International Film Festival has launched a new campaign ahead of this year’s festival, 21 July – 7 August, plays on the Australian public’s perception of world movies.

Made as short films the ads’ scenarios involve the characters aware their film won’t make it into MIFF. The first, named Poland, recreates a gloomy, post-communist scene as the actors consider ways to improve the story. It guest stars a particularly famous Australian actor.

Go Back To Where You Came From special episode

The success of SBS’s three-part program Go Back To Where You Came From has spurred a live television forum on Tuesday 28 June to continue the conversation.

The program, which puts a group of Australians in the shoes of refugees in pursuit of asylum finishes this evening. Last night’s episode was the highest rating program this year for the network with 569,000, beating the Monday’s previous best of 524,000. UPDATE: Thursday’s episode reached 600,000.

Santa Apprentice wins Unicef Annecy Award

Australian/French Coproduction, Santa Apprentice, a children’s animated feature has won the UNICEF Award at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France. Annecy is the largest animation event in the world.

Santa Apprentice, about a seven year old Nicolas learning the ropes to be the best Santa ever, stars Magda Szubanski, Delta Goodrem, Shane Jacobsen and Hugh Sheridan.

The film is directed by Luc Vinciguerra, script Alexandre Reverend and based on an original concept by Jan Van Rijsselberge .

SBS journalist Yaara Bou Melhem wins Young Walkley

Dateline journalist Yaara Bou Melhem won the 2011 Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year yesterday for her coverage of the people’s democracy movement in Syria.

Regarding the video investigation called Freedom’s Call, a statement by SBS said, “Bou Melhem spent a month solo in Syria researching and filming, beneath the radar of the secret police, who were monitoring mobile phones. She was able to persuade dissidents and their relatives to talk about the seeds of the people’s democracy movement.”

Screen Australia announce three million in Enterprise Program funding

The third round of annual funding from Screen Australia for its Enterprise Program was announced today, providing $3 million to production companies and screen businesses.

The program in the first two rounds supplied 17 companies with over $12 million to support the development and expansion of businesses.
