Richard Gray’s AFL film Blinder announces cast
Casting has been announced for Australian AFL film Blinder, directed by Summer Coda’s Richard Gray.
Oliver Ackland (The Slap, Cloudstreet, Wasted on the Young), Rose McIver (The Lovely Bones), Steve Bisley (Red Hill), Angus Sampson (Insidious), Anna Hutchison (Wild Boys), Zoe Carides (Death in Brunswick) and Bob Morley (Road Train) will begin a 10 week shoot in Torquay Victoria on February 20 before moving to Boston Massachusetts.
Australians nominated for BAFTAs
An Australian production company and an Australian actor have been nominated for BAFTA (British Academy of Film Television Arts) Awards overnight.
See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman and Iain Canning have received an Outstanding British Film nomination for Shame, directed by Steve McQueen. The film was a co-production with Film4. Shame is up against My Week with Marilyn, Senna, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Mike Quigley presents at ASTRAs Conference
Co chief executive of the NBN Co, Mike Quigley will give a keynote presentation to the ASTRA Conference on Thursday 22 March.
Quigley will discuss how the NBN will impact the consumer’s appetite for online video content and IPTV, and inversely how that will impact Subscription TV and its 7.3m users.
Four Australian films heading to Film Festival Rotterdam
Three Australian feature films and one short have been selected to screen at the 41st International Film Festival Rotterdam, 25 january – 5 February.
Two films, writer/director John Winter’s Black & White & Sex and writer/director Amiel Courtin-Wilson’s Hail will feature in the Bright Future section of the festival which presents debut or second feature films.
Top of the Lake starts shooting in February
Upcoming mini-series Top of the Lake, produced by Emile Sherman and Iain Canning of See-Saw Films (The King’s Speech, Shame) and Philippa Campbell of Escapade Pictures goes into production on 7 February.
Written by Jane Campion and Gerard Lee and directed by Campion and Garth Davis, the 6x60minute, 7×50 minute series will shoot on location in Queenstown, New Zealand.
Tropfest Roughcut symposium to feature local and international filmmakers
Tropfest continues its expansion with the announcement of filmmaker symposium Tropfest Roughcut, taking place on Saturday 18 February, 2012.
The event will feature speakers Charles Randolph, screenwriter and producer of the US film Love and Other Drugs, director Kieran Darcy-Smith whose debut feature Wish You Were Here opens Sundance Film Festival, film editor Jason Ballantine (The Great Gatsby, Wolf Creek) and composer Lisa Gerrard (Gladiator, Heat, Burning Man).
James Cameron opens Australian office for Cameron Pace Group
James Cameron, director of Avatar and Titanic today opened an office in Australia for his company Cameron Pace Group (CPG).
Based in Melbourne, the office will be run by managing director Andrew Wight, producer of last year’s Sanctum. It is the first international office for the 3D technologies and production services company led by Cameron and Vince Pace.
The Australian office is to answer the growing demand for CPG’s technology and 3D camera equipment across feature films, television, live sports broadcasting.
The Hoff joins Nine’s Celebrity Apprentice
David ‘The Hoff’ Hasselhoff will be a contestant in this season’s Celebrity Apprentice it has been officially announced today.
The show, which starts to filming today for Nine, has struggled to keep the former Baywatch singer a secret but confirmed the coup via the Daily Telegraph, who announced the full line up this morning.

The Palace wins best Australian short film at Flickerfest
A film set during the 1974 Turkish innovation of Cyprus has won Flickerfest’s Best Australian Short Film.
It marked a successful day for the film, which also won best screenplay for a short film, and best fiction short film at the Australian Academy Cinema Television Arts (AACTAs) earlier in the day.
The Palace, written and directed by Anthony Maras and produced by Maras, Kate Croser, and Andros Achilleos won took out the local competition at the Festival, now in its 21 year.
Australian academy presents first AACTA Awards; Cinematographer Don McAlpine honoured
Australian cinematographer Don McAlpine (ACS/ASC) received two standing ovations after tributes from longtime colleagues Jack Thompson and Bruce Beresford at the inaugural Australian Academy Cinema Television Arts (AACTA) awards yesteryday.
McAlpine was awarded the coveted Raymond Longford Award for a lifetime achievement in cinema. McAlpine’s career spans over 50 films including Moulin Rouge and William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, Breaker Morant and most recently Mental.
