Metro Screen calls for new projects
NSW screen education centre Metro Screen has launched a call for applications for funding of 13 new film projects.
Metro Screen, based in Sydney, is making the call under three programs – First Break, Breakout and Indigenous Breakthrough. Read more »
Jack Irish goes into production Monday
Essential Media goes into production on Monday to make two tele-movies based on the character of Jack Irish.
The films come from the creative team behind ABC’s other successful lawyer program Rake, Jack Irish will be directed by Jeffrey Walker and produced by Ian Collie of Essential Media and Entertainment, and adapted by Andrew Knight and Matt Cameron. It will be filmed in and around Melbourne.
The two films; Jack Irish: Bad Debts, and Jack Irish Black Tide, will star Guy Pearce as Jack Irish, the former criminal lawyer, collector of bad debts, footy fan, trainee cabinetmaker and sometime lover.
Open source film awaits your remix
A Melbourne-based director Ryan Alexander Lloyd has released the raw footage of his upcoming film onto the internet for free.
An experiment in open sourcing and distribution, the footage is available for other filmmakers to download, remix and sample to create their own films.
Film maker in cuttlefish stunt at studio opening
Documentary film maker Dan Monceaux interrupted the opening ceremony of South Australian Film Corporation’s new Adelaide studios facility in a stunt to promote his film.
Monceaux produced a fish-shaped pinata and invited outgoing premier Mike Rann to hit it with a rolled up newspaper in a reference to a previous attack on the politician.
In a press release Monceaux described the stunt as “a cunningly crafted surprise protest”. He also claimed the stunt was “”in a style comparable to that of famous political satirists from The Chaser”. Read more »
Tim Robinson steps up as COO at Shine
The restructure of Australia’s biggest TV production company is continuing with Tim Robinson promoted to chief operating officer of Shine Australia and New Zealand.
Robinson joined Shine last October as commercial director after previously working for the company in Europe. Read more »

The first round of announcements has been made for Screen Australia’s newest initiative, the All media program.
The All Media program supports the development of narrative content that across digital platforms, in both linear and non-linear forms as part of the digital ignition strand.
George Negus cancelled for an hour of ‘The Project’
Network Ten announced today that 6:30 with George Negus is to be cancelled.
The news confirms suspicions circulating since Ten cut Video Hits.
In its place will be an hour’s worth of the 7PM Project, to start at 6:30 and be renamed The Project. Negus will remain at Ten and be a regular guest on The Project.
BIFF relaunch Chauvel Award towards adaptations
Brisbane International Film Festival and Screen Queensland have re-formatted the festival’s Chauvel Award to support novel-to-film adaptations with a $40,000 initiative.
Launched at the Brisbane Writer’s Festival’s ‘Books to Box Office’ session, the Chauvel Award, formerly recognising accomplished veterans of the industry, will now recognise film adaptations.

Outdoor broadcast companies Global Television and Cutting Edge have today announced the merger of the two companies.
The company will operate it’s OB units under the Global Television banner.
