The South African-born Moodley will finish his tenure as head of programming at the Durban International Film Festival before taking up the new position in January.

Leigh Small, Sydney Film Festival CEO told Encore: “We did an national and international search and given the status of the festival we wanted someone strong in international programming. He has deep and strong contacts for international markets. He’s already proven he has great connections in that area. Durban Festival is held around the same time as Sydney so the selection of films we look at are the same as Durban – but primarily because he has a keen aesthetic in his programming choices.”

Melbourne Cup rides into first place as local drama holds just six slots in top 100

The Melbourne Cup has ridden into first place in week 45′s TV ratings.

Placing in the top three slots across metro-only, the Melbourne Cup was co-coded to stretch across the ratings board. The Race took first place, Race Presentation took second and The Mounting Yard came third, according to OzTAM.

The ratings only registers home televisions so the ‘race that stops the nation’ stopped more than the recorded 2.653m, with office and pub TVs left out of the measure.

Filmmaker Sarah Watt dies age 53

Filmmaker Sarah Watt died Friday aged 53.

The writer/director of Look Both Ways (2005), died peacefully at her home after a long fight with cancer.

Watt is survived by husband and actor William McInnes and two children Clem, 18 and Stella 13.

According to a death notice from the family, Watt ”died peacefully at home filled with the love she gave to those who adored her – her family. A life of courage humour, intelligence, generosity, honesty and grace,” reports The Age.

Fighting Fear gets biggest Australian doco release

New Australian action documentary Fighting Fear will receive the biggest Australian documentary release in history.

Director Macario de Souza told Encore the film will open across an impressive 60 screens with another possible 6 to be added, while in New Zealand it will open across 15 screens.

Casting announced for Campion’s Top of the Lake

Casting has been announced for the Jane Campion-directed television mini-series Top of the Lake.

An ensemble cast will include Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, On the Road), Holly Hunter (The Piano), Peter Mullan (War Horse, Trainspotting) and David Wenham (Lord of the Rings, Australia, Killing Time).

Campion wrote the series with Gerard Lee (All Men are Liars). The pair also co-wrote feature film Sweetie (1989) and short film Passionless Moments (1983).

Produced by Emile Sherman and Iain Canning’s See-Saw Films (The Kings Speech, Shame), the show will also be produced by upcoming director Garth Davis. Read more »

Industry mourns ICAA CEO Mark Sarfaty

The Independent Cinemas Association of Australia chief executive, Mark Sarfaty, has passed away suddenly.

Previously the head of Dendy Cinema, Sarfaty  was appointed CEO for ICAA in 2007. Most recently he was instrumental in negotiating a visual print fee (VPF) scheme for Australia’s independent cinemas.

AFTRS to add new TV unit

Aftrs AFTRS to add new TV unitThe Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) has launched a new television unit.

The addition to the school comes after a survey of all broadcasters and various production companies within the TV factual and entertainment sector.

More than 50 organisations took part with the results showing that there is a skills shortage in the sector. The findings said that many organisations are recruiting appropriately skilled staff form overseas to fill the gap.

The unit is part of the short course open division as opposed to the graduate course. The school previously had TV award courses but were discontinued a few years ago.
