January 14 is the deadline for Tropfest's score competition, Tropscore.

January 14 is the deadline for Tropfest’s score competition, Tropscore.

Sponsored by the pay-TV music channel Max, Tropscore provides a creative platform for musicians to participate in the art of writing a score for a short film as well as to be part of the Movie Extra Tropfest festival. Entrants must create an original musical score or synch for a three- minute short film that has been produced by Sam Curtain, one of Australia’s talented up and coming directors and producers.

Following the entry deadline, an industry panel will review a shortlist of 20, which will be culled to three finalists. The winner will get the chance to perform their score live at the festival to a national audience of more than 150,000 people, and have their piece included on the 2010 Movie Extra Tropfest Finalist DVD in The Sydney Morning Herald.

The winner will also receive a Gibson DSM Dreadnaught acoustic guitar and one-year membership for the Australian Guild of Screen Composers.

Entries can be registered through www.maxtv.com.au/tropscore and the score/synch on DVD should be received by the organisers by COB Thursday 14 January.

Screenwest has launched the 2009-10 Business Development Fund, providing support of up to $80,000 over two years to production companies and affiliated independent screen industry businesses. A one-day workshop will take place on February 3 to assist potential applicants.

The initiative, which has evolved from the 2008-09 Development Review, has a two-stage application process. The first is an expression of interest template, which must contain informationa about the business’ current status, a development plan and the feasibility of being able to achieve it within two to four years. Applications for this stage close on March 2.

Up to five applicants will be selected for stage two, which will require a detailed business plan and an interview with the panel to discuss it.

The one-day workshop, presented by the Small Business Development Corporation and ScreenWest, will go through, in detail, a business plan template that has been modified specifically for the film and television industry. This template will allow attendees to better plan their documentation and project for the second stage of the process.

The workshop will take place:

Wednesday, 3 February 2010

9:00am – 5:00pm (light lunch provided)

Small Business Development Training Room, Level 1, 553 Hay Street, Perth (near the ScreenWest offices)

RSVP is essential, info@screenwest.com.au by January 27, 2010. For more information contact Shannon Jenkins, (08) 9224 7350.
