- A sexy funding solution for an age-old problem
  
  Chris Murray proposes an ingenious plan to help fund local screen productions with the naughty dollar.
  
  It has recently come to light that the Hungarian government has some innovative ideas for supporting their local film industry. By introducing three different taxes, our European friends plan to channel funds into local productions and ailing art house cinemas.
  
  The first tax would apply to local porn websites; another, a three per cent tax on multiplex tickets, to funnel into art house exhibition; and finally a general 20 per cent tax break on foreign productions.
  
  According to Variety, the latter has so far generated a US$98 million injection into the local economy via the miniseries World Without End, The Borgias and feature film 47 Ronin starring Keanu Reeves. This is on top of income from Brad Pitt’s US$125m budgeted zombie flick World War Z which is currently shooting in the Hungarian capital, Budapest. Read more »

  If there’s a time that Foxtel’s marketing machine outdoes itself, it’s when it comes to reveal its future year’s programming.
  
  Last night Foxtel made the most of having its hands on the Sydney Opera House for the Australia’s Next Top Model final and announced its plans for 2012 too.
  
  It was a glitzy upfront, attended by media agencies and trade journalists, plus plenty of Foxtel personalities.

- Fox Studios comes out of hibernation as the bustling screen hub we want to see
  
  A few months back I visited Fox Studios in Sydney to view the filming of a commercial for Earth Hour.
  
  The main thing that struck me (apart from the massively rude security guy on the gate) was how depressingly empty most of the place was.
  
  It was desolate. It had the atmosphere of a business district on a Sunday afternoon rather than the film hub of one of the world’s great cities.

  This week the Screen Producers Association of Australia presented its list of seven projects that it will be putting in the shop window at its conference. But the SPAAmart list omitted the names of the script writers. A member of the Australian Writers Guild offers this alternative version of events.
  
  Trouble is brewing over this year’s SPAA conference, with the scripts selected for the feature film shop window staging a sit-in at SPAA head office.
  
  Wake Up Dead, a particularly fat script, blocked the door of the SPAA lunchroom just before lunch yesterday while other scripts phoned media outlets with a list of demands.

$1.4m for Victorian projects

Film Victoria will invest $1,389,871 on three documentaries, three TV series and two features.

Beneficiaries include an apocalyptic film produced by Antony Ginnane, a factual/fiction hybried by Amiel Courtin-Wilson, and a mini-series produced by Nicole Minchin (The Wedding Party, Lowdown).

LAST DANCE, FG Film Productions: Antony I Ginnane, Producer; Terence Hammond, Writer; David Pulbrook, Director. Past and present collide in this fiction feature, when holocaust survivor Ulah Lippmann is held hostage by Sadiq Mohammed, a Palestinian terrorist on the run after a Melbourne bombing.

HAIL, Flood Projects: Michael Cody, Producer; Amiel Courtin-Wilson, Producer/Writer/Director. This hybrid factual/fiction feature explores the darkness that befalls a man who has the love of his life ripped away from him.

WOODLEY, Bucket Tree: Simon Wright and Andy Walker, Producers; Frank Woodley, Writer/Producer. A visual comedy mini-series about a hapless 40-year-old divorcee who shares custody of his eight-year-old daughter and is still in love with his ex-wife.

TWENTYSOMETHING, High Wire Films: Nicole Minchin, Producer; Jess Harris, Writer; Paul Currie, Director. This fiction mini-series looks at what happens when a pair that never went to uni, never had a clear talent and never had the drive to grow up, suddenly get the urge to conform and search for their big break.
MOONSURFERS, Mumbo Jumbo Animation: Cecile Blackman, Producer; Philip Dalkin, Writer; Peter Viska, Director. Combining a unique retro‐futuristic style with hip surf music, this children’s television series follows a group of diverse, interplanetary teens who live on Moonport, a lunar stop‐over for intergalactic travellers.

Documentaries

KAPYONG, Kapyong Pty Ltd: Dennis Smith, Writer/Director. A documentary about a forgotten battle in the forgotten war, in which a small band of Australians, Canadians and New Zealanders in Korea stopped the Chinese Army in its tracks.

MAD AS HELL: THE PETER FINCH STORY, Lowlands Media: Robert de Young, Producer/Writer/Director.This documentary maps the life and work of Australian actor Peter Finch as seen through the eyes of actors, managers, producers, and his family; and the relationship between Australia and Britain in the 1940s and 1950s through the lens of Finch’s career.
UTOPIA GIRLS, Renegade Films: Lucy Maclaren, Producer; Alex West, Writer/Producer; Jasmin Tarasin, Director. Historian Clare Wright investigates how and why Australian women fought successfully to become the first in the world to attain equal political rights.
